One Day

Lyrics

(1)

Cerebral Caustic

When I first met you
You didn't go anywhere
'Cept for the drama corporation
Of co-op theatre

Skirting from a course
Bovver boots on (2)
Vacuum breath equals
We never close (3)

But one day you'll find out
That you lost a good man
And one day you'll wake up
And find you lost a good man

Transparent or not

You'll never see my like again
I'm talkin 'bout me
No malice
So transparent

When he walks
When he walks again
All reduced to cost-price
Manual for deceit
Indiscriminate take out
Indiscriminate give out
We never close
Never ever close

You're a snake pit
And one of these days you'll find out
That you lost a good man
And one of these days you'll wake up
And find you lost a good man
And one of these days you'll turn around
And find you lost a good man
And one day you'll wake up
And find you lost a good man

One Day (Rex Sargeant Mix)  (4)

Willkommen to the real world  (5)
Poison and envy
Reference and your manual of deceit
Split it!
Less pleasing mug descends on you  (6)
You say

Willkommen to the real world
You hate this, you want that
Hates that, wants this
You hate this, you want that
Hates that, wants this    (7)

One day you'll wake up and find you've lost a good man
And one day you'll turn 'round and see you lost a good man
You believe everything you hear
Multicolored cheek in bottom of white suite   (8)
Rainmaker changes it    (9)

Willkommen to the real world
Plus times two
Nine year old Virgin suite
Don't call me darling
It's a joke   (10)

Hates this, hates that
Wants that, wants this
Wants that, hates that
Hates this, hates that
Wants that, wants this
In inverted commas
Straight
Poison and envy
Reference
Split it!
You believe everything you hear

I believe I saw something in you
Something that cannot be related to
Was surrounded by snakes

When I first met you, babe
You didn't go anywhere but the school of drama
Your perception is shot
Willkommen to the real world
It's a joke

And one day you'll wake up and find you've lost a good man
And one day you'll turn 'round and see you lost a good man
One day you'll find out you lost a good man
One day you'll wake up and find you lost a good man
One day you'll spark up and find you'd lost a good man

Notes

1. Compare John Lee Hooker's "You Lost a Good Man" ("One of these days you're gonna find out/You lost a good man"); the saying appears in one form or another all over the place (for instance Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man is Hard to Find").

^

2. Bovver boots are boots, such as Doc Martens, thought to be suitable for kicking people; "bovver" is a slangy rendition of "bother," implying the wearer is out for trouble.

^

3. Seemingly an advertising slogan (see also "all reduced to cost price"); the product in question is revealed below with the line "I'm talking about me."

^

4. This was included on the bonus disc of the 2006 Castle/Sanctuary re-release of Cerebral Caustic. Thanks to Zack for the transcription.

^

5. Wilkommen is German for "welcome."

^

6. The first song on Cerebral Caustic, "The Joke," includes the line "Violent food descends over you".

^

7. From "Don't Call Me Darling": "Hates this/Wants this/She hates this".

^

8. Or "sweet"? This line isn't very clear but I left Zack's rendering. "The Joke": "Multicoloured sweets/In bottom of white sweet pack".

^

9. "Rainmaster": "Rainmaker/Changes all rain."

^

10. These were, or were to become, two song titles on Cerebral Caustic, "Don't Call Me Darling" and "The Joke."

Sometimes MES seems to be singing in the present tense:

"You wake up", rather than "you'll wake up" is what I sometimes hear.

Also missing lyrics: after "snake pit", it goes like this:

"And one of these days you'll find out that you lost a good man
One of these days you wake up and find you lost a good man
And one of these days you turn around and find you lost a good man
And one day you wake up and find you lost a good man"

Here's my take on the keyboard-heavy "One Day (Alternative Version)" which is almost an entirely different song:

Willkommen to the real world
Poison and envy
Reference and your manual of deceit
Split it!
Less pleasing mug descends on you
You say

Willkommen to the real world
You hate this, you want that
Hates that, wants this
You hate this, you want that
Hates that, wants this

One day you'll wake up and find you've lost a good man
And one day you'll turn 'round and see you lost a good man
You believe everything you hear
Multicolored cheek in bottom of white suite
Rainmaker changes it

Willkommen to the real world
Plus times two
Nine year old Virgin suite
Don't call me darling
It's a joke

Hates this, hates that
Wants that, wants this
Wants that, hates that
Hates this, hates that
Wants that, wants this
In inverted commas
Straight
Poison and envy
Reference
Split it!
You believe everything you hear

I believe I saw something in you
Something that can be relate to
Was surrounded by snakes

When I first met you, babe
You didn't go anywhere but the school of drama
Your perception is shot
Willkommen to the real world
It's a joke

And one day you'll wake up and find you've lost a good man
And one day you'll turn 'round and see you lost a good man
One day you'll find out you lost a good man
One day you'll wake up and find you lost a good man
One day you'll spark up and find you'd lost a good man

Zack, somehow I don't seem to have that, a search of itunes suggests. Where is that to be found? Is that on some version of Cerebral Caustic as a bonus track? I just have a straightforward CC, with nothing but regular album tracks. I will need to track that down..

It's a bonus track on the 2006 Cerebral Caustic Expanded Edition. For the moment, it's also on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bwi2mk5Oc40

"And one of these days you'll find out
That you lost a good man"

Compare, John Lee Hooker, "You Lost a Good Man":

One of these days you're gonna find out
You lost a good man

Thanks, Dan; there must be other examples, I've been lazy not tracking that down.

Upon further listening, I would like to change "Something that can be relate to" to "Something that cannot be related" in the Rex Sargeant version. Imagine how much better 'Cerebral Caustic' would have been received if this version of "One Day" had been the opening track / overture of the album.

Yeah, and imagine how much worse it would have been received if it had the lyric "something that can be relate to"! I can't believe we let that slip by.

You're right, it's better, although I don't know if it's make-or-break-an-album kind of better. But the keyboards are cool, if murky.
