Ride Away

Lyrics

(1)

As we travel through hill and valley
Ridin' away don't know what you do when you accuse me
You're talking about yourself
You think you're a giant
You think you're a nothing hey hey
(You drive them away)
(You drive them away)

You spread lies and discontent I wish you could see yourself
You drive them away
Through hill and valley
Ridin', ridin', ridin', ridin'
A-hey-hey
(You drive them away)
(You drive them away)

You think you're a giant you know you're nothing hey
Nothing to do with me
You're gone ridin', ridin', ridin'
You spread lies and discontent
I wish you could see yourself
(You drive them away)
(You drive them away)

Drivin'
As you travel through hill and valley
Ridin' away
Ridin' away
A-hey-hey
You drive them away
A-hey-hey
(You drive them away)
(You drive them away)

Well you accuse me you talk about yourself you think you're a giant but you're nothing
You're talking to yourself
And no one else
A-hey-hey
(You drive them away)
(You drive them away)

Buster
I wish you could see yourself you drive them away
No matter what I say
Hey hey
As you travel through hill and valley drive them away
That's what I say
(You drive them away)
(You drive them away)

You think you're a giant you think you're a giant hey
As you travel through hill and valley listen what I say
Nothing to do with me
Just ride away
(You drive them away)
(You drive them away)

While you're ridin' away you remember everything
That I say
Hey hey
Hear what I say
You drive them away
Hey hey
What I say
(You drive them away)
(You drive them away)
(You drive them away)
(You drive them away)

Notes

1. A very straightforward song, lyrically. The melody is heavily indebted to "I'm Gonna Run Away From You" by Tami Lynn, which was a Top Ten hit in Britain in 1971, and was big among the Northern Soul crowd at the time. ^

is there any way that the lyrics to this could have been written by Bec Walker as well? i know it's credited to Eleni and MES . Might we presume (assume?) EP wrote the words ? They don't sound like MES . Well not to me they don't .

There are not many examples (but not none) of MES singing lyrics he didn't write (covers notwithstanding). So I don't think it's safe to assume Eleni wrote these lyrics.

So, in Bonkers in Phoenix, Brix sings her original lyrics. She also sings those parts of Hotel Bloedel and Vixen that she wrote. Neville Wilding mainly leads on Hands Up Billy. Eleni sings Happi Song.

However MES is the only writing credit on I've Been Duped, which Eleni sings.

On the other hand, MES sings Bec Walker's lyrics on Breaking the Rules, Una's words on Dresden Dolls, and Kay Carroll's words on Muzorewi's Daughter.

Anyway I think the sentiment here is not un-MES-like. There are other songs not unlike it.

Also there is "Last Orders" by Friel, and the contemporaneous "Stepping Out" is a little fishy since it expresses the same sentiment, and is likewise un-MES-y in its straightforwardness...also lots of lyrics are to an extent borrowed, we could say. I think it's definitely worth keeping an eye on, I always thought of it as MES showing some range, but you never know.

hey hey
I wouldn't say straight forward, more like two opposite directions at once

There's a sort of similarity Roy Orbison's 'Ride Away' I always thought, minus the me/you confusion.

i believe Eleni DID write the lyrics to this , well , she claims to have to done - and that she wrote other lyrics , not just RIDE AWAY. i am pretty sure there are (many?) other examples of the writing credits not necessarily accurately depicting the authorship of the material. MES / the group seemed to have a funny idea about the writing credits of songs .. ? like he didn't take it all that seriously or something - maybe not that, but, well, i don't know. That stuff about 'borrowing', so much of the music was appropriated ..

but yeah i was just humming it to myself and i thought , it WAS her first record with the group so it kinda makes sense if MES thought, yeah we'll open the new record with these lyrics , almost like a present to her ahahahahahaha. Were they married at that time, i dunno. Just married or something, ha.

Eleni claims to have written the lyrics to this?

Have you got a source for that?

Hmm, it sounds familiar but I don't recall where I might have heard it, I hope joincey has a source...

The theme tune from the Searchers has to be considered as a source particularly the first "ride away" of the chorus

Charles Manson wrote a song called 'Ride away' in 1968, which also has the alternative title form 'Ra-hide away'- this and other Manson material was recorded by members of The Family in 1969, after the arrests, and re-released in 1997 on 'The Family Jams' album.

Sorry it’s taken me three years to reply to you Bzfgt ( is there a way to get notified about further comments in thread etc etc etc ) , Eleni told me herself that she wrote ( the lyrics to ) RIDE AWAY , the conversation was years ago - I forget but she said she wrote it about someone she knew or something
